GIVING CAREGIVERS THE CONFIDENCE AND KNOW-HOW TO HANDLE CHILD EMERGENCIES

3 Sided Cube worked with the Red Cross to create the Red Cross Child Care App, a mobile-first platform designed to make child care and first aid concepts engaging, memorable, and always within reach.

WHAT WAS THE CHALLENGE?

For over a century, the American Red Cross has been a trusted name in emergency response, disaster relief, and first aid training. Responding to nearly 65,000 emergencies every year, it has helped millions of people be prepared for when it matters most. Part of its mission is to ensure that, in an emergency, there are always trained individuals nearby, ready to use their Red Cross skills to save lives.

The Red Cross has long championed tech for good, using digital tools to make lifesaving knowledge accessible to all. Its First Aid apps have revolutionised how users learn, prepare, and act in emergency situations, putting essential knowledge into the hands of those who need it most.

But when it came to childcare-specific first aid, there was a massive gap. Caregivers, whether relatives, babysitters, or nannies, needed a quick-reference, interactive, and engaging tool that wasn’t just about learning first aid but actually retaining and applying it in high-stakes situations.

The challenge was to create a first aid app tailored for babysitters that is easy to use, engaging, and seamlessly integrates with the Red Cross existing first aid ecosystem. It had to be simple enough for a teenage babysitter but detailed enough for someone with more real-world child care experience. The app also needed to act as a refresher tool for the Red Cross Babysitter’s Training course, reinforcing knowledge gained in class.

That’s where the 3 Sided Cube team came in…

WHAT WAS THE SOLUTION?

3 Sided Cube worked with the Red Cross to create the Red Cross Child Care App, a mobile-first platform designed to make child care and first aid concepts engaging, memorable, and always within reach. Our North Star? To promote child care and safety through engaging, accessible, and lifesaving content.

We needed to build a platform that was fast, scalable, and engaging while making sure caregivers could access critical information in seconds. Here’s how we made it happen:

Designed with real-world caregiving scenarios in mind, the app ensures that lifesaving first aid knowledge is always just a tap away.

WHAT DOES THE PLATFORM DO?

LEARN & ENGAGE

Child care and first aid training should be practical, engaging, and easy to retain. The app delivers bite-sized, scenario-based lessons enriched with videos, animations, and real-world case studies that make learning interactive and relevant.

TEST & ACHIEVE

To help users cement their knowledge, the app includes interactive quizzes with instant feedback. Achievement badges provide encouragement and a sense of progress, turning learning into a rewarding experience.

ORGANISE & MANAGE

The Child Records feature allows caregivers to securely store essential details like allergies, emergency contacts, and medical notes, ensuring critical health information is always at their fingertips.

RESPOND & REACT

Emergencies don’t come with a warning. The Emergency tab provides immediate access to CPR steps, choking response guides, and first aid procedures, backed by a persistent 911 button for instant emergency calls.

CERTIFICATION & REFRESHER TRAINING

With standalone certificates, caregivers can manage, store, and renew their first aid credentials easily. The app ensures that learning is not a one-time event but an ongoing habit with timely refresher prompts.

WHAT WERE THE RESULTS?

The Red Cross Child Care App is changing the way caregivers learn and apply skills to care for infants and children, making it easier than ever to gain confidence and be prepared in any situation. More users than ever are actively completing lessons and quizzes, reinforcing their knowledge in a way that sticks.

Caregivers report feeling significantly more confident in handling emergencies, knowing that trusted, expert-approved guidance is always in their pocket. With real-time data from Google Analytics, the Red Cross continues to fine-tune and expand content based on how users engage with the platform, making it smarter and more effective with every update.

The Child Care mobile app will help all users to learn, prepare, and act in emergency situations. Interactive quizzes cover first aid material, a toolkit provides a place to view resources and keep records on the children in their lives. Whether it’s diapering, feeding, treating a scraped knee or responding to a life-threatening emergency, caregivers now have the confidence and tools to take action when it matters most.
