Welcome to Cube Academy Izzy! Tell us a bit about yourself…

So I’m originally from Buckinghamshire, but I moved to Bournemouth to study Graphic Design at the AUB. I’m super passionate about art and design, whilst priding myself on my illustration skills and creativity, so I always knew it was my dream to work in the creative space!

I found that my coursework was a good insight into potential career options, with a broad range of projects such as app design, branding, animation, and print. My other interests include gymming and swimming, collecting plants, cuddling cats, and finding charity shop bargains.

After graduating in July, I gave myself a nice break over the summer, travelling around and going to festivals, before starting to think about stepping into the world of work. I decided to stay in Bournemouth and move in with my friends, as I felt the pandemic had sapped the fun out of my university experience and I didn’t feel I had experienced Bournemouth fully! Having been working in a coffee shop for the last few months, and applying for a million design jobs in my spare time, I’m so excited to have the opportunity to join the team at 3 Sided Cube!

What inspired you to work in Tech for Good?

While I was unsure of the exact direction my degree would take me, I knew I wanted to work for a company whose values I really connected with. I wanted to feel proud in the knowledge that I was working towards something positive, and also alongside a team of people that felt the same, so Cube definitely fits the bill!

I was amazed to see that 3 Sided Cube had previously worked with LUSH as I’m a huge fan of their eco-conscious approach, and low & behold I received one of their products in my ‘Welcome Box’…it was meant to be.

Tell us about your 1st impressions of 3 Sided Cube?

After a good few months of attending interviews in dull, grey offices for uninspiring positions, I was immediately interested in Cube just from one look at the website!

It just looked like a fun, positive company with a real sense of community that many other places lacked. Everyone seemed great in my interviews and when I attended the office for my final presentation, I could definitely picture myself working there! I was particularly impressed by the plants, pink walls, and secret door straight out of Indiana Jones. The dogs are definitely a good addition too (although I am a cat person).

How did you find the recruitment & hiring process?

I originally applied for the UX Designer role after seeing an advert on Indeed. I knew this was ambitious, but I thought it was worth a shot, just to show 3 Sided Cube that I was really interested in working for them.

Initially, I took part in a virtual call with Josh, our People Operations Manager, and he was able to give me an insight into life at Cube & also wanted to know why I was so keen on the role. A week later, I was invited to have a chat with Creative Team Lead, James, and I was able to gain insight into how we design the best products.

Finally, the interview came, and I was invited to visit Cube HQ to present to the team a project that I was most proud of. I’d spent a good amount of time preparing beforehand, and I was able to refer to my university work to present examples of user research, wire-framing, prototyping & app development to the team.

The hiring process itself was so efficient; Josh and James were very welcoming and friendly throughout our initial discussions, and it was just great to know that The Cube Academy is out there to support anyone wanting to get their foot in the Tech for Good door!

I knew I wanted to work for a company whose values I really connected with. I wanted to feel proud in the knowledge that I was working towards something positive, and also alongside a team of people that felt the same, so Cube Academy definitely fits the bill!

What do you hope to achieve during your time in Cube Academy?

I’m looking forward to gaining a deeper understanding of UX and the overall process of developing these products. It’s already been so informative talking to people from different teams and hearing about the roles they play! I’m hoping to become more confident in my abilities by gaining new skills, pushing myself out of my comfort zone and asking questions. Some of the specific skills I am eager to improve upon include presenting to a group, giving and receiving feedback, and getting to grips with the newest technology! I’m just really keen to integrate myself with the team and throw myself in at the deep end.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to anyone after graduating from University looking for their dream role?

Overall, I would say don’t give up, don’t be afraid to be ambitious, and try to reach out to people even if this is out of your comfort zone. Also, try not to take rejection to heart, as it usually means something better is coming for you 🙂

We are always on the hunt for passionate and talented people that are looking to hone their skills. Shout us a holla if you’re interested in joining Cube Academy yourself!
